Latest Updates:

According to Bob Barr, "Liberty includes the freedom to choose a candidate of your choice."

As you are aware, it's once again time to begin ballot access petitioning to place the Libertarian Party presidential candidate on the ballot. Alabama has some of the toughest ballot access laws in the country and the signature threshold is extremely high to place Barr on the presidential ballot with an "L" next to his name. As we did in 2004, we will be using the less burdensome option of collecting fewer signatures to place Barr on the ballot in Alabama as an independent presidential candidate.

In order to accomplish this goal, I'd like to ask each of you to do two things.

First, please visit the Libertarian Party of Alabama Web site and download this petition form. Fill it out according to the instructions provided on the Web site. Keep in mind that each petition has a "County" line on it, so make sure you start a new form if collecting signatures from a different county. Then get your immediate family, friends and co-workers to sign the form and IMMEDIATELY mail it to the Libertarian Party of Alabama.

Here's the address:

Libertarian Party of Alabama
2330 Highland Avenue
Birmingham, AL 35205

The second thing I'm requesting of you is to print several petition forms and start collecting signatures from people you probably don't already know. Please mail your completed petition forms to the LPA and not to the Secretary of State's office so we can keep track of how many are being turned in. Please mail your completed forms to the LPA at the address above as frequently as possible. Again, remember not to mix counties on the same form.

If you've never collected signatures, it's easy. Here are a few tips:

  • ANYONE can circulate petitions for Barr, even if not registered to vote in Alabama.
  • Carry extra pens and petitions, two, three or four clipboards (cardboard works)
  • Label a few petitions with the counties you expect to find people from. One county per sheet.
  • Ask people, "Are you a registered Alabama voter?" before they sign.
  • Ask "Will you sign my petition?" as you hand it to them. Say "This petition will allow Alabamians to vote for presidential candidate Bob Barr. Which county are you registered in?"
  • You may clarify "Signing does not mean you support him, but would only allow Alabamians to have more choices." Or mention, "Because of Alabama's restrictive laws, we are required to collect signatures merely to place our candidate on the ballot."
  • DO NOT ARGUE! Move on to the next person. Getting signatures as quickly as possible is the goal.

Also, collecting signatures can be a lot more fun if you are doing it with a group. Call a few of your friends and set up a time and place to gather signatures. Use your local LP e-mail lists to communicate. Use the existing and growing Meetup structure to set up petitioning events.

Don't forget to talk with your co-workers, church members, family members, drinking buddies, Ron Paul Meetups, and others in the various clubs and organizations to which you belong.

If you have any questions about collecting petition signatures, please contact Mike Rster at gallatin76@aol.com.

Thanks for your help in allowing Alabamians a real choice for president in 2008.

Regards,

Stephen P. Gordon
Chair, Libertarian Party of Alabama

Former Congressman Bob Barr Wins LP Presidential Nomination

Denver - The Libertarian Party has nominated former Congressman Bob Barr as its candidate for president for the 2008 election.

"I'm sure we will emerge here with the strongest ticket in the history of the Libertarian Party," Barr stated in his victory speech shortly after being selected as the Party's nominee. "I want everybody to remember that we only have 163 days to win this election. We cannot waste one single day."

More than 650 Libertarian delegates met in Denver from May 22 till the 26 for the 2008 Libertarian National Convention. After six rounds of voting Sunday afternoon, Barr was selected as the Party's presidential nominee.

"We're proud to present to the American voters Bob Barr as our presidential nominee," says Libertarian Party spokesperson Andrew Davis. "While Republicans and Democrats will fight for their own power in November, Libertarians will fight for Americans. Bob Barr is one of the strongest candidates in the Party's 37-year history, and we look for him to have an enormous impact in the 2008 race. Republicans and Democrats have good reason to fear a candidate like Barr, who refuses to accept the 'business-as-usual' attitude of the current political establishment. Americans want and need another choice, and that choice is Bob Barr."

The LPA offers condolences to Mark Bodenhausen

State Convention Scheduled

The Libertarian Party of Alabama State Convention will be held April 19th and 20th in Birmingham, at the BJCC. We've already got a great start on the speaker line-up, including former Congressman Bob Barr, Stuart Carter of Free the Hops, former LP gubernatorial candidate Loretta Nall, Alabama House Rep. Cam Ward, and former Alabama Ron Paul Field Director Shana Kluck as speakers. UPDATE: Loretta Nall will be unable to attend. In her place, Dan Roberts of DailyDixie.com will be speaking.

We are trying to keep the cost of this convention as low as humanly possible while providing quality speakers in a quality auditorium. Thanks to the hard work of our convention committee, we've managed to get the price down to $25 for both days.
